Two hundred and fifty years of Mewar cremations, and nobody comes

Closed now Dormant VisitWalk

No longer practised. The place or the object survives; the practice does not.

Nineteen Maharanas and their families, in a field of chhatris east of the city, going back to the seventeenth century. There is a small archaeological museum alongside with material from Ahar-Banas, a Chalcolithic culture four thousand years older than anything else on this map. Almost empty on most days. Labelled dormant without apology — this was a working royal cremation ground and it is not one now.
