Four centuries of Mewar building, added to by twenty-two rulers and never once finished
Practised for its own sake by the community that carries it. A visitor is a guest, not the reason it happens.
Not one palace but a stacked accretion of them, begun in 1559 and extended by every Maharana who followed, which is why the courtyards keep changing scale as you climb. Part is still a residence, part is a museum, part is a hotel — a building that never stopped being used, which is rarer than it sounds and is the reason the craft traditions around it survived at all. The picture galleries inside hold the reference standard for Mewar painting.
