Practised for its own sake by the community that carries it. A visitor is a guest, not the reason it happens.

Bells, drums and the whole plinth full. Neither performance nor spectacle — it happens at the same hours whether anyone visits or not, which is precisely what makes it worth attending. Stand at the back, keep to the edge of the mandapa, and let the people who came to pray have the front.

Don't walk in front of the deity during the aarti, don't film the priests, and don't leave in the middle. If you're unsure, watch what the person next to you does.
