Saheliyon Ki Bari

सहेलियों की बाड़ी

A garden built for forty-eight maids of honour, for a life nobody lives any more

Closed now Dormant VisitWalk

No longer practised. The place or the object survives; the practice does not.

Laid out in the eighteenth century for the women who attended a Mewar queen — lotus pools, marble elephants and fountains that run on gravity alone from the lake above, with no pump anywhere in the system. The hydraulics still work. The courtly leisure they were built to serve does not, which is why this is labelled dormant: the place survives, the practice doesn't.
