Practised for its own sake by the community that carries it. A visitor is a guest, not the reason it happens.
Across the water on the Hanuman Ghat side, looking back at the palace, the Jagdish shikhara and the Aravalli behind them. Its cultural function is simply that this is where the city looks at itself — and where, at sunset, half of Udaipur comes to sit.
