Ritual · Gangaur Ghat
गणगौर घाट
The step down to the lake that the whole old city uses
Practised for its own sake by the community that carries it. A visitor is a guest, not the reason it happens.
The triple-arched gateway and the steps below it are the working edge of Lake Pichola — washing, bathing, ritual immersion, and the point from which the Gangaur boat procession leaves. There's no ticket and no opening hour. Come before seven for the version that isn't about you.
People are bathing and doing laundry here. Photograph the architecture freely; photograph people only after asking.
The far bank, and the only place the city composes itself properly
Eighteen days for Gauri, ending with her image carried down to the lake
1651, Indo-Aryan, and still the loudest building in the old city at seven in the morning
