Cloth hung behind the deity — painted to the season, the festival and the hour
Practised for its own sake by the community that carries it. A visitor is a guest, not the reason it happens.
Large cloth paintings made to hang behind Shrinathji, and only secondarily to be sold: lotus ponds for the monsoon, cows for Gopashtami, a plain dark ground for a night festival. Painted in Nathdwara by workshops that have supplied the temple for generations, in mineral pigment on starched cotton, with gold applied last. The difference between a liturgical pichwai and a hotel-lobby pichwai is enormous and nobody in a shop will explain it to you unprompted.
