Temple, studio, bazaar, ghat — the old city in one loop, on foot
The shortest route that gets you from the reference standard to the working hand to the retail end, in that order, which is the only order that makes any of it legible. Start at the temple because it sets the scale everything else was built against. See the palace collection before you see a studio, and a studio before you see a shop — do it backwards and the bazaar will teach you the wrong things. Finish across the water with the light going.
Start at 09:30 when the palace opens and you reach Ambrai Ghat as the light goes. The seven hours below assume you take each stop's full allowance — cut the studio visit and the bazaar in half and it is a comfortable five.
Sunday, when much of Bada Bazaar and Hathipole is shut — the middle third of the walk becomes a closed shutter. Also unpleasant between 12:00 and 15:30 from April to June, when the bazaar stretch has no shade.
